James Allen Selby

November 22nd 2004, hours before sentencing, James Allen Selby hanged himself with a bedsheet in his jail cell....
Let's look at this in details. At 6:45 AM Selby is alive, 15 minutes later, he is dead. My question is "Why would Selby commit suicide BEFORE sentencing, why not wait after?". Can't find any logical answer. but....
During a sentencing hearing the accused has the right to speak and to say basically what he wants.... If the man is dead, of course, he cannot speak any more, answer questions or provide details about anything during and after the sentencing hearing.
" The cell where Selby, 38, hanged himself is monitored by a video camera that showed a jail officer checking on the inmate at 6:45 a.m., Dupnik said.
"We looked at the video and saw the officer making his rounds and he looked in and saw Selby," he said. "About 15 minutes later, he looked again and Selby had placed some paper or something over the window. He went in and Selby had committed suicide."
(Tucson citizen)
Interesting.... If Selby wanted to commit suicide in 15 minutes, why waste time placing something over the window? I end up with 3 scenarios:
Scenario 1) With paper over the window: During the 15 minutes a jail officer watches the video, sees the paper and comes right to Selby's cell
Scenario 2) Without paper over the window: During the same 15 minutes a jail officer sees Selby hanging himself and comes right to his cell.
In both cases IF one officer had watched the video during those 15 minutes, he would have come right to Selby's cell... so why waste time placing anything on this window?
The purpose of the paper on the window is obviously to prevent the video camera from recording what was going on in the cell, but why would Selby care about the video camera recording his suicide?
[Selby had never been considered a suicide risk, said Capt. Gregory Gearhart], [Selby left no suicide note and detectives have found no other prisoners or any corrections officers with whom he discussed his suicidal plan, said Detective Lt. Michael O'Connor], [Mr. Selby had not made any threats of suicide prior to the incident, Pima county sheriff], [Selby was not on a suicide watch when he killed himself Monday, and he never had been...], [Selby insisted he was not suicidal] Etc. etc.Sources:Tucson Citizen, Pima county sherif, 10 News
Scenario 3) Selby did not place the paper himself....
Police records show that Selby - a divorced father of three - worked as a handyman and machinist and traveled often between San Diego and Tucson. (KFMB 04-29-05)....
And what about Selby's internet business? April 2004, Selby claims to have $18,000 in a bank account and said he makes $1,500 a month from an Internet business he started two years ago (source:Tucson citizen) ...
To run an Internet business, Selby needed to have (at least) one computer AND Internet access. What kind of business did Selby run and FROM WHERE? Knowing Selby's taste for raping children and women I wonder if his computer was ever analyzed....
It seems that Selby's confession to the murder of Danielle Van Dam lengthens the long list of unanswered questions in the David Westerfield's case.
